The ride

About this tour

Sri Lanka is renowned for its pristine beaches and historic landmarks, but this journey unveils a side of the island few have explored.

Our adventure begins on the tranquil country roads leading to Bentota beach. From there, we step back in time to explore the majestic Galle Fort, Asia’s largest and best-preserved Dutch fort, with free time to soak in the local charm. As we ride inland, the route undulates through lush landscapes toward the Udawalawa Wildlife Park, offering the chance to spot wild elephants. Our journey then ascends to the serene hills, with a stay at the exquisite Jetwing Kaduruketha hotel. Prepare for the challenge of the famous Ella Gap, followed by a refreshing descent into a jungle retreat. Along the way, you’ll encounter stunning wildlife, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque landscapes, before we make our way to Colombo for a memorable night out in the city.

Today’s century ride takes us across the rolling terrain of Sri Lanka’s southwest province, with ever-changing scenery, lush rice paddies, shaded patches of rainforest, tranquil lakes, and spice estates that perfume the air. It’s a richly textured ride that offers a full sensory experience of the island’s countryside. We finish at Embilipitiya, a town near the entrance of Udawalawe National Park.

The afternoon is free. You may choose to unwind by the lakeside pool, watching kingfishers and herons skim across Chandrika Lake, or opt for an exciting wildlife safari (approx. US$35). Udawalawe is Sri Lanka’s best park for spotting wild elephants, crocodiles, jackals, deer, buffalo, and a dazzling variety of birdlife. We begin the day riding out from our hotel, continuing our steady climb towards the hill town of Ella, just 15 km away, with around 580 meters of elevation gain. If you are looking for a less challenging day on bike, feel free to take the support van and start your ride from Ella ( 51 km, 770 m).

Once at Ella, we pause at a charming local café to enjoy a well-earned coffee and take in the sweeping views. From Ella, the route winds upward again along beautifully surfaced roads that pass through scenic tea estates en route to Haputale. We may stop here for a second coffee, soaking in the mountain air before one of the day’s highlights, a thrilling 20 km descent that drops 500 meters in elevation.

A final short climb brings us to Balangoda, where we we unwind at a luxury forest resort nestled in the cool hills, surrounded by nature in one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic mountain towns.

The day

Our final ride takes us descending out of the southern hills and heading northwest toward Colombo. The route winds through quiet village roads, with constantly shifting landscapes, lush hills, rubber estates, and bustling towns. Along the way, we pass through Ratnapura, famously known as the City of Gems and a key pilgrimage base for Adam’s Peak. If time permits, a visit to the historic Saman Devalaya temple, dating back to 161 BC, offers insight into the region’s spiritual heritage. Saman, the guardian deity of the Peak, is believed to reside here for part of the year.

As we ride, we’ll navigate some urban traffic before easing into peaceful roads tracing the Kalu Ganga (Black River) through the shade of expansive rubber plantations. The day’s ride concludes at the 100 km mark, where we’ll pack up the bikes and drive to Colombo for a celebratory final evening in the city.

Duration

The itinerary here runs 7 days. Yours can run longer if you want more of the country, or shorter if the time is what it is.
