Sri Lanka is renowned for its pristine beaches and historic landmarks, but this journey unveils a side of the island few have explored.
Our adventure begins on the tranquil country roads leading to Bentota beach. From there, we step back in time to explore the majestic Galle Fort, Asia’s largest and best-preserved Dutch fort, with free time to soak in the local charm. As we ride inland, the route undulates through lush landscapes toward the Udawalawa Wildlife Park, offering the chance to spot wild elephants. Our journey then ascends to the serene hills, with a stay at the exquisite Jetwing Kaduruketha hotel. Prepare for the challenge of the famous Ella Gap, followed by a refreshing descent into a jungle retreat. Along the way, you’ll encounter stunning wildlife, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque landscapes, before we make our way to Colombo for a memorable night out in the city.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Colombo – Transfer to Bentota Beach
After check-in, we meet in the evening for a trip briefing and a short warm-up ride exploring the lush coastal lanes. We return to the beach for sunset drinks, the perfect start to your Sri Lankan cycling adventure.
Arrive in Colombo and transfer to the tranquil beaches of Bentota (approx. 1.5 hrs). Bentota is a charming coastal town on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, known for its golden beaches, calm lagoon, and lush greenery. It offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, and is the starting point for your Sri Lankan journey.

Day 2: Bentota to Galle
We begin the day with a gentle, flat ride inland from the hotel, winding through fragrant cinnamon estates and lush countryside. Our first stop offers cinnamon tea paired with local savory treats—a taste of Sri Lankan hospitality. The route is rich with photo-worthy scenes: paddy fields, village life, and the tranquil Gin Ganga River which we follow towards Galle.We have a final regroup in Wakwella before riding the last 8 km together into Galle to our beach resort overlooking the Indian ocean.
Late afternoon we will drive to Galle fort (5 km from our hotel) originally built by the Portuguese in 1558.
Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later fortified by the Dutch, it features cobbled streets, colonial architecture, quaint cafés, and boutique stores. Overlooking the ocean, it’s a place where history, culture, and coastal charm come together beautifully.

Today’s century ride takes us across the rolling terrain of Sri Lanka’s southwest province, with ever-changing scenery—lush rice paddies, shaded patches of rainforest, tranquil lakes, and spice estates that perfume the air. It’s a richly textured ride that offers a full sensory experience of the island’s countryside. We finish at Embilipitiya, a town near the entrance of Udawalawe National Park.
The afternoon is free. You may choose to unwind by the lakeside pool, watching kingfishers and herons skim across Chandrika Lake—or opt for an exciting wildlife safari (approx. US$35). Udawalawe is Sri Lanka’s best park for spotting wild elephants, crocodiles, jackals, deer, buffalo, and a dazzling variety of birdlife. The safari departs from the hotel at 3 PM and takes around 3 hours.
Embilipitiya is a peaceful town nestled near the edge of Udawalawe National Park, serving as a convenient base for wildlife adventures. Surrounded by lush countryside and the tranquil Chandrika Lake, it offers a refreshing blend of nature and rural charm. Its proximity to the park makes it a gateway for spotting elephants and birdlife, while still offering modern comforts for rest and relaxation.

Day 4: Embilipitiya to Ella
Today’s ride skirts the boundary of Udawalawe National Park—so keep your eyes open for wild elephants as we pedal toward the central highlands. The majestic ridge ahead forms the southern slopes of Sri Lanka’s central massif, marking a shift in both terrain and climate.
Ella is a picturesque hill town in Sri Lanka, known for its lush greenery, waterfalls, and tea plantations. A favorite among travelers, it offers stunning views and a laid-back vibe perfect for unwinding.
Our overnight accommodation is situated halfway up the famous Ella Gap road, on the way to Ella. Nestled in the lush hills of Ella, Moi Ella offers a tranquil escape with breathtaking views.

Day 5: Ella to Balangoda
We begin the day riding out from our hotel, continuing our steady climb towards the hill town of Ella—just 15 km away, with around 580 meters of elevation gain. If you are looking for a less challenging day on bike, feel free to take the support van and start your ride from Ella ( 51 km, 770 m).
Once at Ella, we pause at a charming local café to enjoy a well-earned coffee and take in the sweeping views. From Ella, the route winds upward again along beautifully surfaced roads that pass through scenic tea estates en route to Haputale. We may stop here for a second coffee, soaking in the mountain air before one of the day’s highlights—a thrilling 20 km descent that drops 500 meters in elevation.
A final short climb brings us to Balangoda, where we we unwind at a luxury forest resort nestled in the cool hills, surrounded by nature in one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic mountain towns.
Balangoda is a picturesque town nestled in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province, renowned for its lush landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and archaeological significance. Situated approximately 143 kilometers from Colombo, it serves as a gateway to the central highlands and offers a serene retreat amidst nature.
The town is surrounded by verdant tea plantations, forests, and scenic waterfalls, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Day 6: Balangoda to Ingiriya
Our final ride takes us descending out of the southern hills and heading northwest toward Colombo. The route winds through quiet village roads, with constantly shifting landscapes—lush hills, rubber estates, and bustling towns. Along the way, we pass through Ratnapura, famously known as the City of Gems and a key pilgrimage base for Adam’s Peak. If time permits, a visit to the historic Saman Devalaya temple, dating back to 161 BC, offers insight into the region’s spiritual heritage—Saman, the guardian deity of the Peak, is believed to reside here for part of the year.
As we ride, we’ll navigate some urban traffic before easing into peaceful roads tracing the Kalu Ganga (Black River) through the shade of expansive rubber plantations. The day’s ride concludes at the 100 km mark, where we’ll pack up the bikes and drive to Colombo for a celebratory final evening in the city.
Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital, is a dynamic blend of old-world charm and modern energy. Colonial architecture, buzzing markets, and seaside promenades sit alongside sleek hotels, cafés, and galleries. From the historic Colombo Fort to the bustling Pettah bazaar and the peaceful Galle Face Green, the city offers a rich cultural experience. It’s the perfect gateway to explore the island’s diverse landscapes and traditions.

Day 7: Departure to Colombo Airport

Repairs & Safety
Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.
Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding.
