An iconic route in the local cycling community, this journey unfolds with an initial twenty kilometres of level terrain before gradually ascending. We begin the day with a one-hour transfer to conserve energy for the climbs and scenic highlights. Near Chom Thong, we turn towards Doi Inthanon National Park, where the terrain changes dramatically with numerous waterfalls. We stop at one for lunch. Afterwards, riders can choose to summit Doi Inthanon, Thailand’s tallest peak, or take a detour towards Mae Chaem. The final 20 km to Mae Chaem is downhill, offering stunning views along scenic roads.

Today we leave Chaing Mai and ride to Mae Chaem, a tranquil village nestled among mountains on the western side of Doi Inthanon. Renowned for its natural beauty, the area also boasts several ancient temples, adding to its allure.

Today marks one of the more demanding days of the tour, with total ascent for the day exceeding 3000 meters. Early starts are essential as we embark on route 1088 towards Op Lulang National Park, eventually merging onto 108 and guiding us to Mae Sariang, our destination for the day.

Mae Sariang is also home to some charming and atmospheric pubs. After conquering two challenging days, it’s the perfect time to head out and celebrate with some Thai Beer!

It’s a rest day and we plan to kick back and take it easy! After a chill breakfast at our resort, we will head out to a cosy local joint for some authentic Thai coffee. Later, we’ll engage in a leisurely exploration of the town and its surroundings.

Set on the eastern bank of the Yuam River, Mae Sariang remains a sleepy, fairly non-touristy backwater. The town has some interesting things to see and do, including quite a few old teak buildings, and a handful of Burmese/Shan-style Wats.

Today is the easiest ride of the tour. Even with an easy pace, we should be able to make it to Mae Hong Son by noon. This part of Thailand is known for oranges and late December to mid-February is the season. We will ride past locals selling fresh oranges by the roadside, and stop over to sample a few!

Repairs & Safety

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding.

Yes, there is going to be a significant amount of climbing and descending most of the days.

Absolutely! It’s common for our groups to naturally separate into smaller groups on the hills. But one thing we know for sure; ride it too hard and you miss out on the breathtaking scenery and cultural highlights along the route! Remember, this isn’t a race 🙂

Yes, we have 2 rest days. One each at Mae Sariang and Pai. Additionally, a few half-day rides leave us enough time to explore some local sights.

Chiang Mai is one hour by flight from Bangkok. There are no direct flights from India yet, and we need to go via Bangkok or Singapore.

Yes, absolutely! While smaller towns may offer limited options during the day, evenings typically provide a wider selection to accommodate your dietary preferences.

We’ll be travelling through smaller towns, except for Pai. The accommodations consist of charming boutique hotels.

At many points along the route, we ride through forested areas where signals could be weak. In most other places, we will have good signal coverage. All hotels we will be staying at have Wi-Fi available.

A typical group size for our tours ranges between 8 to 14 participants.

Carrying your own bike to Chiang Mai is quite easy. We encourage you to book with Thai Airways, which has a very bike-friendly policy. This has been the preferred airline for all our Thailand tours. Currently, they don’t charge anything extra as long as the total weight of your bike and check-in luggage is under the weight limit. The weight limit typically varies from 25-35 kg depending on your ticket type.

Yes, it is possible to rent a road bike. Considering our tour is during peak season, we encourage you to book the bike early. Please let us know if you would like us to arrange the bike rental on your behalf.

The temperature throughout the day will generally vary from 15-26 degrees Celsius. The average riding temperature will typically range from 18-26 degrees Celsius, making it comfortable for cycling.

We usually start at 8 AM, after breakfast. An earlier start isn’t necessary since the weather in the afternoon is quite pleasant for riding. Also, most hotels won’t allow us to check in before 2 PM.
